Jim Walmsley is a six-time UltraRunner of the Year, four-time Western States winner, and the first American man to win UTMB.

The record so far
Jim Walmsley has been one of the leading American trail ultrarunners of the past decade. His record combines speed on runnable 100-mile courses with wins in major European mountain races and international championship competition.
Walmsley became the first American man to win UTMB in 2023, finishing in 19:37:43. He has also won Western States four times; his 14:09:28 finish in 2019 stood as the overall course record until Vincent Bouillard ran faster in 2026 and remains a defining performance of Walmsley’s career.
His 2025 season included victories at Chianti Ultra Trail, OCC, and the World Long Trail Championship. UltraRunning Magazine subsequently named him men’s UltraRunner of the Year for a sixth time.
