One finish line, many possible formats
Fixed-Distance Multiday Races
A broad family of continuous races where the finish line is fixed but the distance, duration, terrain, and support model vary widely.
How the Format Works
Fixed-distance multiday races ask runners to complete a defined route within a cutoff. The category can include road classics, mountain crossings, and exceptionally long loop races, so the label alone says little about technical difficulty or support.
Start with the actual event rather than a generic distance plan. Course profile, surface, climate, cutoff structure, aid spacing, sleep opportunities, navigation, crew access, qualification, and withdrawal transport define the challenge.

Fixed-Distance FAQs
What makes a fixed-distance race a multiday event?
The course or cutoff extends the effort through multiple day-night cycles for at least part of the field. There is no single distance threshold that makes every race operationally alike.
Are fixed-distance races easier to pace than timed races?
Not inherently. A known finish distance helps with route planning, but terrain, weather, cutoffs, aid gaps, sleep loss, and navigation may make pace highly variable.
How should fixed-distance events be compared?
Compare expected duration, terrain, elevation, climate, cutoff gates, aid spacing, crew and pacer rules, sleep options, mandatory gear, qualification, medical support, and withdrawal transport—not distance alone.
