Gear Review Methodology

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Evaluation Priorities

Multiday gear is judged by whether it solves long-duration race problems: swelling feet, darkness, repeated loops, wet clothing, taste fatigue, battery management, crew access, and the need to make simple decisions while tired.

Inputs We Use

  • Published product specifications and manufacturer documentation.
  • Independent review sources where methodology is clear.
  • Known ultrarunning use cases and race-format demands.
  • Runner feedback patterns, especially repeated failure points.
  • Hands-on use when available and explicitly stated on the page.

How Rankings Work

Rankings prioritize fit-for-purpose utility. For example, a shoe may rank highly for a 24-hour race because it is stable, forgiving, roomy, and durable, even if it is not the fastest shoe for a road marathon. A headlamp may rank highly because its runtime and comfort are predictable, not because it has the highest peak lumen number.

Hands-On Testing

When we have hands-on testing experience, the page should say so clearly. When we rely on specifications, public reviews, and ultrarunning requirements instead, the page should not imply lab or field testing.

Price and Availability

Gear prices, models, and availability change. Treat listed prices as approximate at the time of update and check current retailer or manufacturer information before buying.
