Course & Terrain

Point-to-point mountain course on the Glenwood Horse Trail, gravel forest roads, grassy roads and rocky single-track in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. It runs from the Big Hellgate Creek parking lot, 2.3 miles from Natural Bridge Station, to Camp Bethel, 10 miles north of Troutville. There are nine aid stations, and the course crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway four times.

Key course features to know before comparing this race:

  • Night start beside Big Hellgate Creek, with a stream crossing before the first aid station
  • Climb of about 1,200 ft on Forest Service Road 35 to Petites Gap
  • Blue Ridge Parkway crossings at Petites Gap, Floyd's Field, Bobblett's Gap and Black Horse Gap
  • Long, rocky single-track from Bobblett's Gap to Day Creek
  • Final climb to Black Horse Gap and descent into Camp Bethel

A mix of gravel forest roads, grassy roads and rocky single-track. The Glenwood Horse Trail is marked with orange paint and plastic blazes, and the organizer adds streamers, with reflective streamers at tricky turns in the night section. The application's checkpoint mileages end at 62.5 miles at Camp Bethel. Aaron Schwartzbard's course overview, linked from the organizer's site, says runners have covered 35 miles at Little Cove Mountain with 31 to go, more than Horton's section distances suggest.

The organizer calls December weather in Virginia very unpredictable: 30 to 40°F at night and 50 to 60°F by day, or 20 to 30°F at night and 30 to 40°F by day. Past races had a foot of snow and temperatures in the teens (2003), ice on 4 to 8 inches of snow (2005), 11°F (2006), 8°F (2016) and freezing rain for the first 10 hours (2021). In 2025 iRunFar reported 24°F at the start and snow on parts of the first 30 miles. Daylight does not arrive until 6:30 or 7:00 AM.

Entry & Logistics

Listed qualification and support details
Registration and feesCheck the official event website for current availability, deadlines, prices, taxes, and refund terms.
QualificationSelection by the race committee, which takes runners it thinks can finish within the time limit. Applicants list the races they have completed in the last year, with distance, time and place, and older finishes beyond that. The application says runners should have finished multiple 50-milers and 100-milers to be considered qualified. Applications go by mail with a check to Dr. David Horton in Lynchburg, and entry fees cannot be refunded or transferred.
Support modelNine aid stations. Awards are presented as runners finish. Sub-18-hour finishers receive a Patagonia award, the overall winners a special award, and five-time finishers a special award. Camp Bethel has showers and post-race food, and runners may stay there on Saturday night at no charge.
Crew / pacersCrews may meet runners at every aid station except the first, third and sixth, which the course overview linked from the organizer's site names as Forest Service Road 35, Camping Gap and Little Cove Mountain. The organizer asks crews to drive slowly on the gravel roads between aid stations. The 2026 application does not mention pacers.
Drop bagsOnly for runners without a crew: one drop bag, available at Floyd's Field (mile 22.5) and then moved to Bearwallow Gap (mile 42.5).
Logistics noteCheck-in starts around 5:00 PM on Friday, December 11, at Camp Bethel. A pasta dinner is served around 6:00 PM (free for registered runners, about $1 cash for others), the course briefing is around 8:00 PM, and vehicles leave for the start at 10:50 PM. The start is 26.8 miles from Camp Bethel, a 30 to 35-minute drive. Horton rents a 12 to 16-passenger van and asks runners with crews to help carry others; nobody should leave a vehicle at the start.

Why This Race Matters

Hellgate is David Horton's December night race in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, first run in 2003. It starts one minute after midnight on the second Saturday in December at the northern end of the Glenwood Horse Trail and finishes at Camp Bethel near Fincastle. It is billed as 100K++, and the organizer describes it as a 66.6-mile trail race. Entry is by paper application, and Horton's race committee accepts only runners it thinks can finish inside 18 hours. The 2026 race is the 24th edition and a Western States 100 qualifier for the 2028 lottery.

Historical benchmark notes in the directory record (verify current records with the linked official sources):

  • Men: Brian Culmo, 10:10:38, 2023.
  • Women: Rachel Spaulding, 11:59:06, 2021, the only women's time under 12 hours in the organizer's champions list.
  • Most wins: Michael Dubova, three in a row (2020–2022). Annette Bednosky, Justine Morrison and Helen Lavin have each won the women's race twice.
  • Finish rate 2003–2025: 2,386 finishers from 2,887 starters (82.6%). The highest was 93.1% in 2015 and the lowest 61.1% in 2006.

Preparing for a Race Like Hellgate 100K++

The fixed-distance race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:

Best Fit

  • Experienced runners with several 50-mile and 100-mile finishes
  • Runners looking for a late-season Western States qualifier
  • Those comfortable racing through a cold winter night in the mountains

Planning Notes

  • Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
  • The directory does not mark this as having simpler logistics. Confirm qualification, terrain, support, registration, medical, and withdrawal requirements before planning around it.
  • More than six hours of darkness after the 12:01 AM start
  • Two hard cutoffs: Floyd's Field by 6:40 AM and Bearwallow Gap by 12:30 PM
  • Snow, ice and freezing rain in some years; the organizer advises glasses or goggles against frozen eyes
  • Do not drive to the start and leave a car there
  • No refunds or transfers of the entry fee

Event FAQs

When is the Hellgate 100K in 2026?

The 24th Hellgate starts at 12:01 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at the Big Hellgate Creek parking lot near Natural Bridge Station, Virginia. Check-in opens around 5:00 PM on Friday, December 11, at Camp Bethel, and runners leave for the start at 10:50 PM.

How long is the Hellgate 100K?

Longer than 100 km. The organizer bills it as 100K++ and describes it as a 66.6-mile trail race. The checkpoint mileages in the application add up to 62.5 miles, but the course overview linked from the organizer's site says the real distance is longer than those figures.

How do you get into Hellgate?

By mailing a paper application and check to David Horton. The race committee accepts runners it thinks can finish within 18 hours and expects multiple 50-mile and 100-mile finishes. For 2026, about 100 runners were to be picked on October 14 and the rest on October 30, up to a limit of 150, with no waiting list.

Where are the Hellgate 100K results?

The organizer's results page links each year's results, recent years on Webscorer. Its 2025 link currently opens the 2023 results; the 2025 results are on Webscorer race 416213, still marked preliminary. In 2025 Brandon Fogarty won in 11:10:46 and Lexi Delisle in 13:10:32. The course records are Brian Culmo's 10:10:38 from 2023 and Rachel Spaulding's 11:59:06 from 2021.

How many runners finish Hellgate?

Most of them. In 2025, 124 of 143 starters finished. Across 2003 to 2025 the organizer counts 2,386 finishers from 2,887 starters, or 82.6%.
