Joe McConaughy is an American trail runner with a 45-day self-supported Appalachian Trail record, major long-trail FKTs, and a Cocodona 250 win.
Joe ‘Stringbean’ McConaughy is an American ultrarunner known for combining long-distance trail racing with fastest-known-time projects. His published FKT history includes the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, Long Trail, Arizona Trail, and John Muir Trail.
In 2017, McConaughy completed the northbound Appalachian Trail in 45 days, 12 hours, and 15 minutes without a dedicated support crew. Fastest Known Time continues to list that performance for the route’s self-supported category.
McConaughy has also translated his long-trail experience to organized races. He won the 2022 Cocodona 250 in 59:28:54, returned to finish fourth in 2024, and recorded podium finishes at the 2025 Black Canyon 100K and Tillamook Burn 50 Mile.
