World bests from 50 km to 200 km
Set major track and road benchmarks across seven standard ultra distances; the performances have since been surpassed in several disciplines.
Track-ultra pioneer and former 100 km world-best holder
Don Ritchie set landmark world bests from 50 km to 200 km and earned silver at the inaugural IAU 100 km World Cup.
Don Ritchie was a Scottish ultrarunner whose precise pacing produced a series of landmark track and road performances. Scottish Athletics credits him with world bests at 50 km, 40 miles, 50 miles, 100 km, 150 km, 100 miles, and 200 km during a career that helped define modern fixed-distance ultrarunning.
His 6:10:20 for 100 km at Crystal Palace in 1978 was the world best of its era and remained the recognized benchmark until 2018. Current records are faster, so the mark is presented here as a former world best. His 11:30:51 for 100 miles in 1977 and 4:51:49 for 50 miles in 1983 were similarly important historical performances.
Ritchie also succeeded in championship and longer formats. He earned silver at the inaugural IAU 100 km World Cup in 1987, covered 267.543 km to win the 1990 indoor 24-hour championship, and completed John O’Groats to Land’s End in 10 days, 15 hours, and 27 minutes in 1989.
