Entry & Logistics

Listed qualification and support details
Registration and feesCheck the official event website for current availability, deadlines, prices, taxes, and refund terms.
QualificationNo qualifying race is required. Priority registration opened May 5, 2026 for runners with a valid UTMB Index, and general registration two days later. Italian law requires a medical certificate under Ministerial Decree 18/02/1982 before a registration is validated, and individual search-and-rescue insurance for Italy is mandatory.
Support modelEleven aid points between start and finish. Drinks only at Murgia Materana and Masseria Giacoia; hot food at Laterza, Castellaneta, Grotte di Sileno and Nafoura; solid food at the rest. Aid stations hand out no cups, plates or cutlery, so runners bring their own.
Crew / pacersOne companion per runner, only at aid stations where assistance is allowed. The 2026 course table marks Ginosa, Laterza, Castellaneta and Nafoura. Supporters need no wristband. Running with anyone outside the marked zones near aid stations is forbidden.
Drop bagsOne official 30-liter UTMB World Series bag, handed out at bib collection and left at the start in Matera (bag deposit 8:00 to 9:00 PM on via Lanera). Runners get it back at Castellaneta (km 83.5) and at the finish. Personal bags and poles are not accepted.
Logistics noteBibs are collected in person only, with ID, the registration QR code and the race pack (for the timing chip), on Friday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Ultra-Trail Village on Lungomare Eroi del Mare in Castellaneta Marina. Runners who did not book a slot get one assigned. Organizer shuttles run from Castellaneta Marina to the start. Free parking is available along Lungomare Eroi del Mare. The 100M prize ceremony is at 6:00 PM Saturday.

Why This Race Matters

Puglia by UTMB is a UTMB World Series event, not one of UTMB’s four 2026 Majors. I Sassi di Matera is its 100M-category race: the organizer’s FAQ says finishers earn 4 Running Stones and a UTMB Index in that category, and UTMB Live says the top three men and women in the 100M earn direct qualification for the UTMB final at HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc. Each Running Stone counts as one entry in the Finals lottery. Western States lists the race as a new qualifier for its 2027 lottery, with a 27-hour standard. The 2025 edition ran November 7–9; 2026 moves to October.

Historical benchmark notes in the directory record (verify current records with the linked official sources):

  • 2025 winners (UTMB Live, 145.2 km course): Marek Causidis (Czech Republic), 13:36:37; Anastasia Davydova, 16:35:08

Preparing for a Race Like Puglia by UTMB

The fixed-distance race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:

Best Fit

  • Runners chasing 4 Running Stones on a low-altitude course
  • A Western States qualifier inside the 2027 lottery window

Planning Notes

  • Prepare for sleep decisions, weather swings, and aid-station discipline. The distance is only one part of a multi-day fixed-distance race.
  • Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
  • The directory does not mark this as having simpler logistics. Confirm qualification, terrain, support, registration, medical, and withdrawal requirements before planning around it.
  • Poles, if used, must be carried from start to finish and are banned in signed zones
  • Mandatory gear can be checked at any time, with penalties up to disqualification
  • Earphones must come out at road crossings and checkpoints
  • Bib pickup is at the finish town, Castellaneta Marina, not at the Matera start

Event FAQs

How long is the Puglia by UTMB 100-mile race?

I Sassi di Matera is UTMB’s 100M-category race, but it is not 100 miles. UTMB’s race page lists 145 km and 3,500 m of climbing; the course table on the same page totals 142.5 km, and UTMB Live and Western States list 144 km. Runners have 27 hours, from 9:00 PM Friday to 11:59 PM Saturday.

Is Puglia by UTMB a UTMB World Series Major?

No. It is a UTMB World Series event; the 2026 Majors are Ultra-Trail Australia, Val d’Aran, Kodiak and Chiang Mai. Finishing the 100M earns 4 Running Stones and a UTMB Index, and the top three men and women qualify directly for the UTMB final.
