Edition noteThis would be the first edition actually run: UTMB Live marks both 2025 races canceled, after an atmospheric river hit the ranch days before the start. Race weekend is November 13–15, 2026, with the 50K on Saturday and the 25K on Sunday. The 50K is full; the 25K was still open on November 5. Sources differ slightly on size: the race page says 51 km and 1,550 m, while UTMB Live says 51.8 km and 1,547 m and the aid chart revised October 14, 2026, says 32.2 miles and 5,076 ft, which agree with each other.

Course & Terrain

Single loop on ranch roads, wagon tracks and singletrack, starting and finishing at the same point on Rancho San Fernando Rey.

Key course features to know before comparing this race:

  • Red Rock hydration station at mile 3.3, ahead of 1,403 ft of climbing on the way to Loma Alta
  • Loma Alta, the 2,758-ft mountain at the center of the ranch, with its aid station at mile 8.1
  • A water crossing near mile 14
  • Cow Camp at mile 21.3, the only intermediate cutoff
  • Steeper climbs around miles 15 and 23, where the guide says poles help

The route mainly follows historic ranching roads and wagon tracks, with singletrack down oak canyons and up to open ridgetops. The ranch mixes coastal sage scrub, live oak woodland and grassland, along with pastures, vineyards, olive groves, creek and river crossings, and serpentine rock. Some dirt roads may be shared with off-highway vehicles, and the guide discourages headphones there. Horses and cattle may be on or near the course, and runners are told to give them plenty of room. The ranch is closed outside race weekend, so the only way to scout is the Lagrion video preview recorded in October 2026. All distances are marked with blue ribbons.

The organizer describes mid-November in the valley as crisp mornings and warmer days, and warns that conditions can differ between Solvang, the ranch and higher ground. Rain is the known risk: an atmospheric river of over 13 inches canceled the 2025 race, in an amount the organizers said the ranch had not seen since 1965. Race management can delay the start, change the course or call a Hot or Cold Weather Kit, perhaps only days before the race, so bring both kits.

Entry & Logistics

Listed qualification and support details
Registration and feesCheck the official event website for current availability, deadlines, prices, taxes, and refund terms.
QualificationThe registration page lists no qualifying race; 50K runners must be at least 18, and 25K runners at least 16. The 50K is sold out. The 25K cost $169 all-in on November 5, or $358 for a UTMB Community Charity Bib, with online entry closing November 8 at 11:59 PM Pacific and onsite entry at the expo for any open distance. There is no race-day registration. Entries are non-refundable and non-transferable, and the one-time deferral window closed October 15, 2026. Entry includes a bib, recycled race shirt, collapsible cup, shuttle, timing, finisher medal and post-race food.
Support modelThe 2026 chart lists four full aid stations (Loma Alta, Old Man Mountain, Cow Camp and Horse Canyon), the Red Rock hydration station, and two water-only stops at Santa Cruz and Boot Hill. Stations generally stock Naak drink mix and gels, fruit, soda, sweet and salty snacks, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, though not every station has the full Naak range. Runners must carry a personal cup of at least 15 cl. The guide promises medical care at every aid station and the finish.
Crew / pacersThe race site’s crew page still pointed to the 2025 guide on November 5, and said the 2026 version would come 4–6 weeks before the race. That 2025 guide marks no aid station for crew access. The 2026 rules ban outside aid between stations and ban being accompanied by anyone not registered, outside spectator zones, so there are no pacers. Trekking poles are allowed.
Drop bagsThe 2026 chart lists Start/Finish bags at the start and no on-course drop bags.
Logistics noteSolvang is the base. The expo is in Downtown Solvang at 482 Alisal Rd, with bib pickup Friday, November 13, 2:00–7:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM–5:00 PM, a HOKA shakeout run at 4:00 PM Friday and the runner briefing 5:00–5:30 PM Friday. Bring your QR code, sent Wednesday of race week, and a photo ID; you must collect your own bib. 50K bibs are also available at the ranch 5:30–6:50 AM on race morning. There is no parking or drop-off at the ranch. Runner-only shuttles leave Alisal Mesa Rd, Solvang, from 5:00 to 6:00 AM, the drive takes 25–30 minutes, and the last shuttle back leaves at 5:30 PM. Most Solvang hotels are within 0.75 miles of the shuttle lot, and the organizer suggests walking there. A short walk on a dirt road follows the drop-off. Animals, including dogs and service animals, are not allowed on the ranch or shuttles. Overall awards are at noon and age-group awards at 3:00 PM.

Why This Race Matters

Pacific Trails is UTMB’s World Series event on California’s Central Coast, held on Rancho San Fernando Rey, a private ranch that had never hosted a public race. UTMB announced it in July 2025 as its ninth North American event, with Dillon Osleger as race director and 900 places planned across a 50K and a 25K. That first edition, set for November 22–23, 2025, was called off on November 18 after more than 13 inches of rain turned a dry creek bed into a river and blocked vehicle access to the course. No edition has been run yet, so there are no past winners or course records. The 50K carries 2 Running Stones for the UTMB World Series Finals lottery, and its top three men and women qualify automatically for OCC.

Preparing for a Race Like Pacific Trails California by UTMB

The fixed-distance race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:

Best Fit

  • Runners collecting Running Stones, with 2 for the 50K and 3 for finishing both races in the 2-Day Challenge
  • Fast runners chasing an automatic OCC place, which goes to the top three men and women
  • Runners who want to see a private ranch that is otherwise closed to the public
  • Runners moving up to a mountain 50K, with a 10-hour limit and one intermediate cutoff

Planning Notes

  • Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
  • The directory does not mark this as having simpler logistics. Confirm qualification, terrain, support, registration, medical, and withdrawal requirements before planning around it.
  • Leave Cow Camp at mile 21.3 by 1:30 PM. A runner arriving after that time is dropped and loses the bib, and the organizer can add or change cutoffs.
  • The race page calls the course point-to-point, but the runner guide gives a single start and finish, and the course GPX ends within a few meters of where it begins.
  • The GPX on the race page was last updated August 14, 2025, and the chart warns that permitting may change the course. Follow the course markings, which take priority over GPX files.
  • Mandatory for the 50K: phone, 15 cl personal cup, 1 liter of water capacity, safety blanket, whistle and food reserve. A missing item can mean disqualification.
  • Older course material may use earlier station names: Old Man Mountain was Cow Camp, and today’s Cow Camp was Demesio.
  • UTMB Live uses LiveTrail checkpoint splits, not GPS, and the guide warns of delays of up to two hours.

Event FAQs

When is Pacific Trails California by UTMB in 2026?

Race weekend is November 13–15, 2026, at Rancho San Fernando Rey in the Santa Ynez Valley. The expo opens Friday in Solvang, the 50K starts Saturday, November 14, at 7:00 AM, and the 25K starts Sunday, November 15, at 8:00 AM.

Who won Pacific Trails California in 2025?

Nobody. The 2025 races, set for November 22–23, were canceled on November 18 after over 13 inches of rain cut vehicle access across the ranch. Runners could defer to the next edition, move to another U.S. UTMB World Series event or take a refund. UTMB Live lists both 2025 races as canceled, so the 2026 edition will produce the first results.

Is Pacific Trails sold out?

The 50K is. On November 5, the race site showed it as full, while the 25K was open at $169 all-in. Online entry closes November 8 at 11:59 PM Pacific, or sooner if the race fills. Any distance still open can also be entered at the expo, but there is no race-day registration.

How many Running Stones does Pacific Trails give?

The 50K gives 2 Running Stones and the 25K gives 1. Finishing both in the 2-Day Challenge earns 3 in total, plus a commemorative artwork. The top three men and women in the 50K also qualify for the 2027 OCC, though they must pay for that bib. Stones count toward the Finals lottery, which also needs a valid UTMB Index.

How hard is the Pacific Trails 50K?

The organizer’s chart gives 32.2 miles with 5,076 feet of climbing and matching descent, and about 1,800 feet of that comes in the first 8.1 miles. Runners have 10 hours in total, must be through Cow Camp at mile 21.3 by 1:30 PM and must finish by 5:00 PM. Footing is mostly ranch roads and wagon tracks, with some singletrack.

How do I get to the start at Rancho San Fernando Rey?

Only by shuttle. There is no parking at the ranch and no drop-offs are allowed. On Saturday, runner shuttles leave Alisal Mesa Rd in Solvang between 5:00 and 6:00 AM, and the ride takes 25–30 minutes. Spectator shuttles run from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and the organizer suggests walking to the lot from Solvang hotels.
