Course & Terrain
Point-to-point from the cove at Cala Estellencs along the Camí des Correu to Esporles, then through Valldemossa, Bunyola, Orient, Alaró, Tossals Verds, the Lluc area, the Cúber reservoir and Fornalutx to the finish at Port de Sóller. Much of the route crosses private land open only on race day. Other races: Camins de Pedra en Sec (100K category, 104 km, 3,740 m+, 6:00 AM Saturday from Cala Estellencs), Els Tres Mils (50K, 56 km, 2,450 m+, 8:00 AM Saturday from Selva) and Camins de s’Arxiduc (20K, 26 km, 1,000 m+, 9:00 AM Sunday from Valldemossa).
Key course features to know before comparing this race:
- Camí des Correu from Estellencs to Esporles
- Lluc Sanctuary area and the Cúber reservoir
- Views of Puig Major, Mallorca’s highest peak
Holm oak and pine forest, cobbled paths and dry-stone walls, from sea level at both ends to a high point of about 1,206 m near Coll des Prat in the course profile.
If it rains heavily on race day or the day before, the organization may ban poles on the whole route under its environmental permit.
Entry & Logistics
| Registration and fees | Check the official event website for current availability, deadlines, prices, taxes, and refund terms. |
|---|---|
| Qualification | A valid UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category, and a birth year of 2006 or earlier. The organizer advises against entering with a UTMB Index below 400, the level its cutoffs are set for. Entry ran by direct purchase from January 14, 2026, with the first 48 hours reserved for UTMB Index holders; 2026 prices ran from €234 to €289 plus an 8% fee. Accident insurance covering mountain rescue in Spain is mandatory. |
| Support model | Twelve aid points after the start, with hot food at Alaró and Lluc and drinks only at Sóller. Runners carry a personal cup of at least 15 cl and 1.5 liters of water. The regulations warn that slower runners can spend 3 to 4 hours between aid stations. |
| Crew / pacers | One assistant per runner, only at Alaró and Lluc, with a single bag of up to 30 liters. Pacers are not allowed, and being accompanied outside the zones near aid stations brings a 15-minute penalty. |
| Drop bags | Two official 30-liter bags, dropped before runners walk down to Cala d’Estellencs. One goes to Alaró and one to Lluc; runners hand each back before leaving, and the organization takes them to Port de Sóller. Bags can be collected there up to 2 hours after the race closes. No poles in bags. |
| Logistics note | The event is based in Sóller, with the finish at Port de Sóller. Palma de Mallorca airport (PMI) is the main gateway. The organization runs race-day buses for runners staying elsewhere on the island. Results are published on UTMB Live. |
Why This Race Matters
Mallorca by UTMB is a UTMB World Series event run by UTMB Iberia in the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not one of UTMB’s four 2026 Majors. The race page says SDT finishers earn 4 Running Stones for the UTMB World Series Finals draw, and that the first three men and women overall, plus runners who qualify by UTMB Score, gain direct access to the UTMB final at HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc. Western States lists the SDT as a qualifier for its 2027 lottery, with a 30-hour standard.
Historical benchmark notes in the directory record (verify current records with the linked official sources):
- 2025 winners (UTMB Live, 138 km course): Hannes Namberger (Germany), 13:37:31; Isla Smith, 18:12:55
- UTMB Live lists the 2024 Serra de Tramuntana race as cancelled
Preparing for a Race Like Mallorca by UTMB
The fixed-distance race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:
- Walking strategy for ultramarathons: When and how to walk by terrain, effort and cutoffs.
- Crew and aid-station strategy: Crew tables, aid stops, drop bags and runner preferences.
- Hydration and sodium for ultramarathons: Fluid, sodium, thirst, sweat rate and hyponatremia risk.
- Tapering for ultramarathons: Plan the taper and race week around your own recovery.
Best Fit
- Experienced mountain runners who already hold a UTMB Index
- A Western States qualifier inside the 2027 lottery window
Planning Notes
- Prepare for sleep decisions, weather swings, and aid-station discipline. The distance is only one part of a multi-day fixed-distance race.
- Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
- The directory does not mark this as having simpler logistics. Confirm qualification, terrain, support, registration, medical, and withdrawal requirements before planning around it.
- Poles must have rubber tips, and runners must carry a spare set
- Two working headlamps are mandatory
- Missing a waterproof jacket, headlamp, bivouac bag, 1.5 liters of water or a smartphone means disqualification
- A phone switched off or in airplane mode costs 15 minutes
Event FAQs
Do you need a UTMB Index to run Mallorca by UTMB?
Yes for the longer races. The SDT requires a valid UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category. The organizer also advises against entering with an index below 400, because that is the level the cutoffs are built on. Only the 26 km Camins de s’Arxiduc is open without an index.
What does finishing the SDT earn toward UTMB Mont-Blanc?
4 Running Stones for the UTMB World Series Finals draw. The race page adds that the first three men and women overall, and runners who qualify by UTMB Score, get direct access to the UTMB final at HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc.
Where can crews meet runners at Mallorca by UTMB?
Only at Alaró (km 60) and Lluc (km 97), where one assistant per runner may hand over a bag of up to 30 liters. Assistance anywhere else is forbidden, and pacers are not allowed.
Is Mallorca by UTMB a Western States qualifier?
Yes. Western States lists the Serra de Tramuntana (SDT) as a qualifier for its 2027 lottery with a 30-hour standard. It lists the race at 135 km.
