Course & Terrain
Mountain loop from Corso Italia in Cortina d’Ampezzo: north to Ospitale, east over Passo Tre Croci to Misurina and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, west to Cimabanche, then south through Val Travenanzes to Col Gallina, Passo Giau and Croda da Lago before the descent to Cortina.
Key course features to know before comparing this race:
- The 11:00 PM start on Corso Italia in Cortina d’Ampezzo
- Misurina (km 42.6) and the climb to Rifugio Auronzo (2,308 m)
- Forcella Lavaredo (2,456 m), the high point beside the Tre Cime, around sunrise
- Cimabanche (km 67.5), the drop-bag and crew base
- Val Travenanzes up to Rifugio Col Gallina (km 97.7)
- Rifugio Averau, Passo Giau and Rifugio Croda da Lago before the final descent
The route follows hiking trails and singletrack through the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, and UTMB’s course data grades every leg after the start T3, a difficult mountain trail on the Swiss Alpine Club scale. The 2026 Runner Guide measures the loop at 122.4 km with 5,803 m of climbing and 5,792 m of descent, between 1,210 m at the Cortina start and 2,456 m at Forcella Lavaredo. The night opens with 18.7 km to Ospitale, the climb to Passo Tre Croci (1,798 m) and a drop to Federavecchia before Misurina at km 42.6. From there the course climbs to Rifugio Auronzo (2,308 m) and over Forcella Lavaredo beside the Tre Cime, then runs 15 km, mostly downhill, to Cimabanche (1,532 m). From Malga Ra Stua the course drops to Pian de Loa and climbs Val Travenanzes to Col Gallina (2,058 m), Rifugio Averau (2,417 m) and Passo Giau (2,243 m), then passes Rifugio Croda da Lago before a descent of more than 800 m through Mortisa to Cortina. Mandatory gear includes shoes suited to Dolomite stones, rocks and gravel, and poles are allowed if carried from the start.
The 11:00 PM start puts the first climbs in darkness, the organizer bills the passage under the Tre Cime as a sunrise section, and slower runners are still out on Saturday night before the 5:00 AM Sunday cutoff. The regulations expect runners to cope alone with night, wind, cold, fog, rain or snow at altitude, and the organizer can change the mandatory gear list up to 12 hours before the start based on the official forecast. The race website publishes that forecast from the Arabba Avalanche Centre of ARPAV, the Veneto environmental agency. The forecast issued on race Saturday, June 27, 2026, described a subtropical high with temperatures well above average: a high of 30°C in Cortina on Saturday, 14 to 19°C at 2,200 m, a freezing level of 4,600 m and a 10 to 20% chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. Even in heat, the kit list includes warm waterproof gloves, a long-sleeved top, long tights and a hooded waterproof jacket with a membrane rated at least 10,000 Schmerber.
Format & Support (as run)
| Qualification | Entry is by lottery, and only runners with a valid UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category can pre-register for the 120K. For 2026, free pre-registration ran from 10:00 AM CET on September 8 to 11:59 PM on September 15, 2025. Results appeared in MyUTMB accounts on September 17, selected runners had until September 22 to pay, and a second draw on September 23 offered unclaimed places to the waiting list, with payment due by September 28. The 2026 race had 1,800 bibs at €267.05, including 22% VAT and a 9% platform fee. Groups of two to five could enter the draw together, runners who had missed both the 2024 and 2025 lotteries got guaranteed entry, and charity bibs were also sold. For 2027, pre-registration ran September 7 to 14, 2026, the organizer says the lottery results are out, and the fee is €320.31. Runners must be 18 on race day and carry insurance that covers search, rescue and evacuation in Italy. Every runner also uploads a competitive-sport medical certificate under Italian Ministerial Decree 18/02/1982, or the organizer’s form, between January 10 and May 15, and for 2026 it had to be valid on June 28. Entries cannot be transferred or deferred, and cancelling refunds 60% of the fee up to four months before the event and 30% up to two months before. The Lavaredo Ultra Trail is in UTMB’s higher Group B tier for elites: free entry currently needs a 100M UTMB Index of 849 for men or 707 for women, and paid direct entry 758 or 595. |
|---|---|
| Support model | The 120K has eight aid stations: Ospitale, Passo Tre Croci, Misurina, Cimabanche, Malga Ra Stua, Rifugio Col Gallina, Passo Giau and Rifugio Croda da Lago. Rifugio Auronzo adds a drinks point, Malga Travenanzes has a fountain, and the finish has its own aid. The first aid station comes at km 18.7, and the longest stretch without food is the 24.9 km from Misurina over Forcella Lavaredo to Cimabanche, with only the Rifugio Auronzo drinks point on the way; Malga Ra Stua to Col Gallina is 20.6 km with only the fountain. Every station stocks Näak drink mix, bars and waffles, fruit, bread, Coca-Cola and hot and cold tea; broth and soup start at Passo Tre Croci, rice is served at Cimabanche, Malga Ra Stua, Col Gallina and Passo Giau, and gluten-free food at Misurina, Cimabanche and Col Gallina. No disposable cups, plates or cutlery are handed out, so runners carry a cup of at least 15 cl, their own utensils, at least 1 liter of water and at least €20 for food at mountain huts. The course data marks medical posts at all eight aid stations and at Forcella Lavaredo and Rifugio Averau, and runners can also call the command center or use the LiveTrail app’s SOS function. A runner who needs an IV drip must withdraw. After the finish, runners get a hot meal and showers at the Olympic Ice Stadium from noon Saturday to 5:00 AM Sunday. |
| Crew / pacers | Pacers are not allowed, and running with anyone outside the marked zones near aid stations costs 15 minutes. One assistant per runner may help at Cimabanche (km 67.5) and Rifugio Col Gallina (km 97.7) only, inside the designated area and with the station chief’s agreement. The assistant can hand over one bag of up to 30 liters and give small care, such as a massage or blister treatment, while the runner sits; medical help from crews is forbidden, and assistance anywhere else costs an hour. In 2026 crews reached Cimabanche on public bus line 445 from Cortina toward Dobbiaco, about 20 minutes and €3.50, with Saturday departures at 8:05 AM, 10:05 AM and 1:05 PM. Roadside parking at Col Gallina and Passo Giau is banned and cars may be towed, so the organizer ran a €15 round-trip shuttle from free parking at Socrepes to both points, booked through the runner’s personal dashboard by June 22. The 2026 program listed cheering areas at Cimabanche from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM and at Col Gallina from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Saturday. |
| Drop bags | One drop bag, at Cimabanche (km 67.5), the race’s life base. Runners get the bag with their bib, put their number sticker on it and hand it in outside the Olympic Ice Stadium between 9:00 and 10:30 PM on Friday, and only organizer bags are carried. Cimabanche bags come back to the Ice Stadium for collection from 3:00 PM Saturday to noon Sunday, and bags left after that are destroyed. A separate changing room and finish-bag deposit at the Ice Stadium opens 9:00 to 10:30 PM on Friday, with pickup from noon Saturday to noon Sunday. Poles may not go in the bags. |
Why This Race Matters
Simone Brogioni launched the Lavaredo Ultra Trail in 2007 as a 46 km race from Rifugio Auronzo, below the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and about 250 runners started the first edition, according to iRunFar. Cristina Murgia joined him that year and is now the race director. The race then moved to the village of Auronzo di Cadore, where it stayed until 2011, and in 2012 to Cortina d’Ampezzo, where the route grew to 120 km. It was part of the first Ultra-Trail World Tour season in 2014. IRONMAN Italy organizes it with the Municipality of Cortina d’Ampezzo, and since 2022 it has been a UTMB World Series Event: the 120K is a 100M-category race worth 4 Running Stones, and the top three men and women qualify directly for the UTMB final in Chamonix. Past winners include Anton Krupicka and Rory Bosio (2014), Caroline Chaverot (2015 and 2017), Hayden Hawks (2018), Tim Tollefson (2019) and Courtney Dauwalter (2025). In 2026, the 19th edition, Hannes Namberger won for the fourth time in four starts with a course record of 11:45:31, and Andreas Reiterer and Tobias Geiser crossed the line together to share second. Sunmaya Budha of Nepal caught Lucy Bartholomew near Rifugio Croda da Lago and set a women’s record of 13:33:18, and UTMB Live counted 1,027 finishers from 1,491 starters.
Historical benchmark notes in the directory record (verify current records with the linked official sources):
- Men: Hannes Namberger (Germany), 11:45:31, 2026
- Women: Sunmaya Budha (Nepal), 13:33:18, 2026
- Previous men’s record: Ben Dhiman (USA), 11:49:16, 2025, which had broken Namberger’s 11:56:28 from 2022
- Previous women’s mark: Caroline Chaverot (France), 13:40:34, 2015, according to PlanetMountain; iRunFar treated Rosanna Buchauer’s 14:09:23 from 2024 as the record
- Faster winning times in UTMB’s archive came on other courses: 2010 (11:10:43) and 2011 (9:29:51), before the 2012 move to Cortina and the 120 km route, and 2013 (7:39:35), when snow cut the race from 118 km to 85 km, according to an organizer release published by Ian Corless
Preparing for a Race Like Lavaredo Ultra Trail by UTMB
The fixed-distance race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:
- Walking strategy for ultramarathons: When and how to walk by terrain, effort and cutoffs.
- Crew and aid-station strategy: Crew tables, aid stops, drop bags and runner preferences.
- Hydration and sodium for ultramarathons: Fluid, sodium, thirst, sweat rate and hyponatremia risk.
- Tapering for ultramarathons: Plan the taper and race week around your own recovery.
Best Fit
- Runners with a UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category chasing 4 Running Stones
- Experienced mountain runners ready for a full night on rocky Dolomite trails
- A Western States qualifier: the 2026 race counts for the 2027 lottery with a 26-hour standard
Planning Notes
- Prepare for sleep decisions, weather swings, and aid-station discipline. The distance is only one part of a multi-day fixed-distance race.
- Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
- The directory does not mark this as having simpler logistics. Confirm qualification, terrain, support, registration, medical, and withdrawal requirements before planning around it.
