Why the Simple Average Is Wrong

Pace is time per unit of distance. A four-minute run and one-minute walk cover unequal distances, so averaging the two pace numbers gives the wrong combined result. This tool calculates the distance inside each full cycle first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is combined run/walk pace calculated?

The calculator converts each pace into distance covered during its interval, adds the distances, then divides the full cycle time by that distance. Simply averaging two pace values gives the wrong result.

Does walking time count as moving time?

Yes. Planned walking is movement. Aid-station, foot-care and other stationary time is entered separately in distance mode or as non-moving time in timed-event mode.

Can this predict my ultramarathon finish?

No. It calculates a constant mathematical scenario. Terrain, fatigue, heat, darkness, nutrition, stops and physical symptoms can change both running and walking pace.

Which run/walk ratio is best?

There is no universal best ratio. Compare the arithmetic, then test realistic options in long training sessions on similar terrain without turning the fastest calculated row into a prescription.
