Former six-day world-best holder and 1,300-mile pioneer
Sandra Barwick set a long-standing six-day world best and became the first woman to finish a certified 1,300-mile race.
Sandra ‘Sandy’ Barwick is a New Zealand ultrarunner whose results helped establish women’s standards in multiday racing. At Campbelltown in 1990 she covered 883.631 km in six days, a women’s world best that stood until Camille Herron surpassed it in 2024.
In the 1991 Sri Chinmoy 1,300 Mile Race, Barwick became the first woman to complete 1,300 miles under certified race conditions. She finished second overall in 17 days, 22 hours, 46 minutes, and 7 seconds, recording a 1,000-mile split of 12 days, 14 hours, 38 minutes, and 40 seconds along the way.
Her career also included a women’s victory in the 1990 Sydney-to-Melbourne race and a 1992 run along the length of New Zealand to raise money for diabetes. More than three decades later, she returned to recorded competition at age 77, covering 101.212 km in the 24-hour event at the 2026 NZ Ultramarathon Festival.
