| Last woman standing | Kelly Romano | 23 yards |
Nobody completed one more yard than everyone else: Macpherson and Sinnott are both credited with 24 laps and neither started the 25th, so under the race rules there is no winner. The organizer’s results sheet lists backyard and Mini Backyard runners together.

Course & Terrain
Repeated 6.7 km yards on dirt road and mountain-bike singletrack at Smithfield Mountain Bike Park.
Key course features to know before comparing this race:
- Rainforest and pine-forest singletrack on the Flat Snake, Echidna and Greenfields trails
- Three on-course water stations at about 2, 3.3 and 4.2 km
- Smurf dress-up lap (yard 3) and the Speedy Smurf lap (yard 6), with A$200 for the first man and woman across the line
The 2026 guide describes a 1.6 km out-and-back on open dirt road, a pass back through the event precinct, about 1.3 km more of dirt road, then mountain-bike singletrack: 1.3 km through rainforest and pine forest on Flat Snake, a clearing, and about 2 km on Echidna and Greenfields before a short dirt-road run to the corral. The organizer calls these the park’s easier trails; trail shoes are its first choice, especially when wet, though road shoes work. The trails stay open to mountain bikers, and runners must give way. Night laps on the singletrack are slower, and the course is marked with reflective tape and LED lights.
Heat and humidity are the main opponent. The organizer gives October averages of about 29°C (84°F) by day and 21°C (70°F) at night, with rain less likely than in the summer wet season. Its 2026 guide forecast highs in the high 20s and lows in the low to mid 20s, with some showers, and warned of a real risk of dehydration on the day laps. Much of the loop is under rainforest canopy, but the opening out-and-back on dirt road is unshaded. Nights are warm, though rain can make an extra layer welcome.
Format & Support (as run)
| Qualification | Open entry with no qualifying result. The minimum age is 10, and runners under 18 need a parent or guardian on site for the whole event. For 2026, Race Roster sold backyard entries in three windows: A$120 in a flash sale from October 27–29, 2025, A$170 until October 8, 2026, and A$200 until registration closed on October 22. The Mini Backyard cost A$70, A$100 or A$125, and Mini runners could pay the difference to keep going after six laps. Every entrant had to watch the virtual briefing the organizer posted on YouTube on October 20. The organizer has not yet published the 2027 date. |
|---|---|
| Support model | The loop has three water stations, at about 2 km, 3.3 km (in the pine-forest singletrack near the Smithfield MTB Park trailhead) and 4.2 km. The communal aid station in the event precinct, beside the race director’s tent, stocks water, cola, ginger ale, SFuels Race+ electrolyte drink, tea and instant coffee, chips, lollies, muesli bars, two-minute noodles, cup-a-soup, cookies and fruit, plus a kettle and a small generator-powered charging station for runners only. Smok’n’Steel serves meals and a coffee van runs on Saturday. At least one qualified first aid officer is on site throughout, backed by first-aid-trained event staff. |
| Crew / pacers | Crews may help only in the event precinct between yards. Once a yard starts, runners cannot take anything from or hand anything to a crew, cannot stash supplies anywhere on the course (water stations included), and nobody may run or ride alongside them; outside assistance means disqualification. There are no pacers, trekking poles are banned, and only marshals and the race director may be on course besides runners. Crews and family can walk or run the loop during the Friday afternoon course recce. |
Why This Race Matters
Smurf’s Backyard Ultra is organized by Cairns race director Joshua “Smurf” Duff of Smurf Endurance Sports, and he bills it as Far North Queensland’s only official backyard ultra. Duff’s first backyard was the 2022 Old Mates Backyard Ultra at Upper Barron on the Tablelands, which Adam Fox won with 19 yards. The race moved to Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, on the James Cook University grounds, under the Smurf’s name in 2023, and 2026 was the fourth Smurf’s edition. Big’s Backyard Ultra lists it as a Bronze race. Unusually, it crowns both a last man and a last woman standing. The 34-yard record dates from 2023, when Fox and Rhys Williams stopped together and nobody won.
Historical benchmark notes in the directory record (verify current records with the linked official sources):
- Course record: Adam Fox and Rhys Williams, 34 yards, 2023 (they stopped together, so there was no winner)
- Women: Kelly Romano-Inverardi, 25 yards, 2025
- Outright winners: Adam Fox, 26 yards, 2024; Norman Eigl, 28 yards, 2025
- 2026: no winner after Murray Macpherson and Ben Sinnott both stopped at 24 yards; Kelly Romano was last woman standing with 23 yards
Preparing for a Race Like Smurf's Backyard Ultra
The backyard ultra race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:
- Backyard ultras explained: Rules, distance math, current records and how a race ends.
- Backyard ultra training plan: A 16-week framework with hourly-loop rehearsals and a printable worksheet.
- Backyard ultra race strategy: Loop pacing, the routine between loops, sleep and knowing when to stop.
- Backyard ultra nutrition: A fueling framework to test for eating and drinking between loops.
Best Fit
- Backyard first-timers, who can try six laps in the Mini Backyard
- Runners who want to test themselves in tropical heat and humidity
- Women chasing a last-woman-standing title, since the race crowns one
Planning Notes
- Practice the exact hourly routine: loop, eat, foot check, bottle refill, and back to the start. The format rewards repeatability.
- Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
- The directory marks this as having comparatively simpler logistics. That editorial label is not a safety rating; verify cutoffs, terrain, support, crew access, and withdrawal procedures.
Event FAQs
Who won Smurf’s Backyard Ultra 2026?
Nobody won. Murray Macpherson and Ben Sinnott both completed 24 yards, about 161 km, and neither started the 25th, so under backyard rules there was no last man standing. Kelly Romano was last woman standing with 23 yards, seven more than any other woman. The race started at 7:00 AM on Saturday, October 24, and ended at 7:00 AM on Sunday.
What is the Smurf’s Backyard Ultra record?
The record is 34 yards, about 228 km, set in 2023 when Adam Fox and Rhys Williams stopped together, so that year had no winner. The women’s best is 25 yards by Kelly Romano-Inverardi in 2025. Since then the last runners have reached 26 yards (Adam Fox, 2024), 28 (Norman Eigl, 2025) and 24 (Macpherson and Sinnott together, 2026).
How hard is Smurf’s Backyard Ultra?
The 6.7 km loop mixes dirt road with the easier mountain-bike singletrack at Smithfield and climbs roughly 95 to 125 m per lap, depending on which organizer page you read. The bigger problem is Cairns heat and humidity, with October averages around 29°C by day and 21°C at night. The organizer says anyone who can cover 10 km in 80 to 90 minutes can finish a lap inside the hour.
Can beginners run it, and what is the Mini Backyard?
Yes. The Mini Backyard starts with the main race at 7:00 AM and stops after six laps, about 40 km, for A$70 to A$125 depending on when you enter; Mini runners can pay the difference and keep going. The minimum age for both events is 10, and runners under 18 need a parent on site. The two events share a cap of 250 entries.
Can my crew or a pacer help during a lap?
No. Crews can help only in the event precinct between yards. Nobody may run or ride alongside a runner, hand over food or drink, or take anything during a yard, and supplies cannot be stashed on the course; outside assistance means disqualification. Runners can use the three on-course water stations, and the precinct aid station has drinks, snacks, noodles and fruit.
