Course & Terrain

A 6.706 km loop at the Freizeitanlage Reßnig, just outside Ferlach, run once every hour. The organizer’s GPX traces a single loop that starts and finishes at the same point. Arrows on the ground and signs at key junctions mark the way, and the organizer describes no separate night course.

Key course features to know before comparing this race:

  • Start and finish beside the base camp at the Freizeitanlage Reßnig
  • A single loop of gravel paths, with less than 10% asphalt
  • A large LED wall for spectators next to the start and finish

More than 90% gravel and less than 10% asphalt, which the organizer calls not technically challenging. The course stays between about 420 and 425 m above sea level; the organizer describes it as very flat to slightly hilly.

The organizer expects November highs of up to about 15°C (59°F) in the day and lows near 0°C (32°F) at night. Darkness lasts about 14 hours in early November, so most yards are run by headlamp.

Entry & Logistics

Listed qualification and support details
Registration and feesCheck the official event website for current availability, deadlines, prices, taxes, and refund terms.
QualificationNo qualifying race. Applications closed at 11:59 PM on August 23, 2026, and applicants could add an Instagram reel. The organizing team then picked the field and emailed each runner a code; the €129.90 fee had to be paid within 48 hours or the place went to someone else. Entries can’t be transferred, and there is no race-day entry.
Support modelA refreshment station at the start and finish has fruit, snacks, sports drinks and water. The organizer says it supplements runners’ own food and doesn’t provide full meals. Base camp has showers, toilets and drinking water but no power. Every starter gets a T-shirt and, after their race, a patch or medal; the last runner standing also gets a trophy.
Crew / pacersCrews may help only at base camp. Spectators are welcome around the clock and may stand along the course, but they may not run with or help runners; doing so disqualifies the runner.
Logistics noteBib pickup was 5:00–7:00 PM on Friday, November 6, at Gasthof Plasch in Reßnig, followed by the mandatory race briefing from 8:00 to 9:00 PM, which runners could also follow online. Base camp check-in is 8:00–11:00 AM on race day. Runners bring their own tent and gear, with up to 3 × 3 m each, first come, first served. Parking is next to the grounds, with no RV pitches with power or water. Ferlach is about 15 minutes south of Klagenfurt on the B85; from Slovenia, the route is over the Loibl Pass (B91). The organizer streams the race 24/7 on YouTube and posts updates on Instagram at @onemorehourultra and @austriabackyardultra. Teams of three who entered under the same team name are scored together at no extra cost.

Why This Race Matters

One More Hour is the first race of the Austria Backyard Ultra (ABU) series in Carinthia. The series’ other races are in Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg, and its Hall of Fame adds up every yard a runner has completed at ABU events: on October 26, 2026, Markus Schieder led with 471. Patrick Riepl’s RP Business e.U. organizes this race. The organizer says results count toward the Backyard Ultra World Ranking, and Big’s Backyard Ultra lists the race on its race page. For a sense of the top Austrian level, Stefan Wilfinger won Austria’s national race at the October 2026 world team championship with 52 yards, one more than Adrian Mirtl. Both are in the top five of the ABU Hall of Fame.

Preparing for a Race Like One More Hour Ultra

The backyard ultra race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:

Best Fit

  • First-time backyard runners: the loop is flat, mostly gravel and not technical
  • Runners aiming for a first 100 km (15 yards) or 100 miles (24 yards)

Planning Notes

  • Practice the exact hourly routine: loop, eat, foot check, bottle refill, and back to the start. The format rewards repeatability.
  • The directory marks this as having comparatively simpler logistics. That editorial label is not a safety rating; verify cutoffs, terrain, support, crew access, and withdrawal procedures.
  • A headlamp is mandatory at dusk and in the dark, and runners must wear reflective clothing
  • Any help on the course, even from spectators, disqualifies the runner
  • Base camp has no electricity, so runners bring their own power
  • Nights near freezing call for warm layers between yards
