Course & Terrain
Point-to-point in four stages along the whole Grampians Peaks Trail, from Mount Zero Picnic Area in the north to Dunkeld in the south. Each stage finish (Halls Gap, Mt William Carpark, Griffin Fireline) is the next morning’s start, and shuttles bring runners back to Halls Gap every evening. The organizer says 98% of the route is single hiking trail.
Key course features to know before comparing this race:
- The Flat Rock slab climb and the Taipan Wall above Mount Zero on Stage 1
- Wartook Lookout over four lakes before the long descent to Halls Gap
- The Pinnacles Lookout, Mount Rosea, the Seven Dials and Redmans Bluff on Stage 2
- Durd Durd on the Major Mitchell Plateau, the course high point at 1,167 m (3,829 ft), on Stage 3
- Signal Peak, Mud-Dadjug (Mt Abrupt) and Wurgarri (Mt Sturgeon) on the final stage into Dunkeld
Sandstone slabs, smooth dirt trail, stairs and technical rocky outcrops. The organizer calls the 15 km over the Seven Dials and Redmans Bluff on Stage 2 the hardest part of the whole trail, and the stepped climb to Durd Durd on Stage 3 the steepest climb. Stage 3 also has a slow boulder field before Yarram Campground. Stage 4 has three steep climbs and descents with many stairs. The only paved section is the road to the summit of Mount William. Poles are allowed in every race.
The organizer’s safety plan warns of cold nights and hot days and watches for heat, storms and fire. Its team reviews the risks at 10:00 AM each day and sends runners an update at noon. Any decision to change, hold or stop a race needs a quorum of three senior leaders, and contingency routes are mapped in advance, including a published Stage 3 contingency map. On Stage 2 the sun can heat the rock slabs. At the first stage race in 2023, Trail Run Mag reported storms and torrential rain on Stage 2 and fog over the Major Mitchell Plateau on Stage 3. For 2026, the gear list updated November 4 said an ice bandana was not needed and did not enforce the extra warm layer for stage racers.
Entry & Logistics
| Registration and fees | Check the official event website for current availability, deadlines, prices, taxes, and refund terms. |
|---|---|
| Qualification | No qualifying race, but runners must be 18 or older on race day. The organizer calls the course relentless and extremely technical and asks entrants not to start without good preparation. After each stage its medical team decides whether a runner may start the next day. Runners may skip a day and continue the following day, but RaceResult’s overall standings rank only runners with a time on every stage. Solo entry cost A$968 at the 48-hour priority sale from February 3, A$1,075 from February 5 and A$1,290 as a late entry from October 8, including GST and fees. A payment plan was offered to runners who entered by March 31. |
| Support model | Each stage has two aid stations, which double as relay changeovers, and Stage 1 adds a water point on the Coppermine Track at 6.4 km. Aid stations stock water, PURE electrolyte drink and gels, Coke, ginger beer, fruit, lollies, chocolate, chips and boiled potatoes; most also have hot soup, noodles, tea and coffee, and ice is supplied to suit the heat. In 2026 Yarram Gap Rd on Stage 3 is only an emergency aid station, with first aid, water, electrolyte, lollies and chips. The event is cup-free. A doctor, a critical care nurse, nurses, a paramedic and first aid officers work from medical bases at Halls Gap, Jimmy Creek and Dunkeld. Two safety officers staff every open aid station, every runner carries a GPS tracker, and every aid station has Starlink. |
| Crew / pacers | Pacers are allowed only in the continuous Miler, not in the stage race. On Stage 1, crews may meet runners only at GAR Trailhead (15.5 km); Mt Difficult Rd has no crew access. On Stages 2 and 3, crews may go to every aid station except Yarram Gap Rd, though the organizer’s aid station page lists no crew access at Griffin Fireline, the Stage 3 finish, where runners catch the shuttle back to Halls Gap. Stage 4 is uncrewed until the Dunkeld finish. |
| Drop bags | A finish-line drop bag for warm clothes and recovery food waits at every stage finish: Halls Gap, Mt William Carpark, Griffin Fireline and Dunkeld. Bags for Stages 1 and 2 are left at the Halls Gap Event Village, and Stage 1 also allows a bag at the Mt Difficult Rd aid station. Bags for Stages 3 and 4 are left at the start lines, so runners can pack the morning’s warm layers. The organizer asks for a labeled, insulated, zipped bag of the supermarket cooler type. |
| Logistics note | Halls Gap is about 260 km (162 mi) northwest of Melbourne, roughly a three-hour drive, or 2 hours 50 minutes from Melbourne Airport. V/Line trains and coaches run from Southern Cross Station via Ararat or via Ballarat and Stawell. The Event Village is at the Halls Gap Information Centre forecourt and Centenary Hall, 115 Grampians Rd. Stage racers registered on Wednesday, November 4, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM or 6:30 to 8:00 PM, with gear checks, tracker allocation and briefings at 11:30 AM or 5:30 PM. A free shuttle, booked in advance, left Centenary Hall at 4:15 AM for the Stage 1 start. Shuttles to the Stage 3 and 4 starts are mandatory and need no booking, and rolling shuttles return runners to Halls Gap from every finish. Nightly meals cost A$40 each or A$175 for all five nights, and the organizer sells a five-night dorm package at Camp Acacia for A$395. Stage race prizes are presented at 7:00 PM Sunday in Halls Gap. |
Why This Race Matters
SingleTrack Events, led by event director Joe Dorph, started the GPT100 in 2023 on the Grampians Peaks Trail, which Parks Victoria finished building in 2021. The first stage race ran November 23–26, 2023. It covers the same Mount Zero to Dunkeld course as the continuous GPT100 Miler, a World Trail Majors race since 2025, but in daylight over four days. For ITRA and the UTMB Index the organizer uploads four separate results. Stage 1 also counts as the GPT50k, so stage racers race for the 50 km podium and earn World Trail Majors Short Series points. The stage race podium itself is decided on total time, and the first man and the first woman each win A$1,000. Women outnumbered men in 2026: the Stage 1 results list 83 solo finishers, 47 women and 36 men.
Historical benchmark notes in the directory record (verify current records with the linked official sources):
- Stage race record, men: Dan Jones (New Zealand), 16:34:29, 2025.
- Stage race record, women: Nadya Fedorova (Australia), 23:44:17, 2025.
- Stage records listed by the organizer: Stage 2, Dan Jones, 4:02:42 (2025), and Alison Wilson, 5:03:05 (2026); Stage 3, Dan Jones, 4:24:03, and Nadya Fedorova, 6:21:49 (both 2025); Stage 4, Aditya Kesarcodi-Watson, 3:26:20, and Ariarn Huston, 4:14:19 (both 2024).
- Stage 1 doubles as the GPT50k, whose records are Koken Ogasawara (Japan), 4:19:03, and Fuzhao Xiang (China), 5:05:59.
Preparing for a Race Like Grampians Peaks Trail 100 Miler Stage Race
The stage race guide covers the format as a whole. These guides go deeper:
- Stage race packing list: Mandatory kit, daily carry, camp bags, food and foot care.
- Walking strategy for ultramarathons: When and how to walk by terrain, effort and cutoffs.
- Hydration and sodium for ultramarathons: Fluid, sodium, thirst, sweat rate and hyponatremia risk.
- Blister prevention: Socks, taping, lubrication, shoe fit and hot spots.
Best Fit
- Trail runners who want to cover the whole Grampians Peaks Trail in daylight
- Runners who want 100 miles of technical trail without running through the night
- Runners who like a fixed base, shared dinners and a fresh start each morning
Planning Notes
- Study the mandatory gear list early and rehearse carrying the exact pack weight you expect to use on race day.
- Train for terrain-specific fatigue. Technical trails and mountain courses demand downhill durability, hiking efficiency, and reliable night lighting.
- The directory does not mark this as having simpler logistics. Confirm qualification, terrain, support, registration, medical, and withdrawal requirements before planning around it.
- Technical, rocky trail on every stage, with slab climbs, scrambles and long stair sections
- Mobile coverage is patchy, and a phone with Telstra coverage is mandatory gear
- Daily on-course gear checks: 30 minutes’ penalty for one missing item, disqualification for two
- With Yarram Gap Rd only an emergency stop in 2026, Stage 3 has 23.9 km (14.9 mi) between full aid stations at Jimmy Creek Camp and Griffin Fireline
- Crews driving between aid stations should watch for kangaroos, especially at night
Event FAQs
What time does each stage of the GPT100 Stage Race start?
Stage 1 started at 6:00 AM AEDT on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Mount Zero Picnic Area, after a 4:15 AM shuttle from Halls Gap. Stage 2 starts at 5:50 AM Friday in Halls Gap, Stage 3 at 6:00 AM Saturday at Mt William Carpark and Stage 4 at 6:30 AM Sunday at Griffin Fireline. Shuttles to the Stage 3 and 4 starts leave Halls Gap at 5:00 AM.
Where can I follow the GPT100 Stage Race live?
The organizer’s Living It Live page shows RaceResult live results, overall and stage standings, and a GPS tracking map for each stage. The same results are on RaceResult, where the stage race overall standings list each runner’s stage times and gap to the leader.
What are the GPT100 Stage Race cutoffs?
Each stage has its own limit: 13 hours for Stage 1 (finish by 7:00 PM), 12 hours for Stage 3 (6:00 PM) and 10.5 hours for Stage 4 (5:00 PM in Dunkeld). Stage 2 starts at 5:50 AM and closes at 6:00 PM; the stage race page calls that 12:10 hours and the cutoffs page 12 hours. Every stage also has cutoffs at its two aid stations.
Do you need a qualifier for the GPT100 Stage Race?
No. Unlike the continuous GPT100 Miler, which needs a trail race finish of 100 km or more, a GPT50k finish or one of six listed qualifiers, the stage race has no qualifying standard. Runners must be 18 or older, and the medical team decides after each stage whether a runner may start the next day. Entry for 2026 cost A$968 to A$1,290 and has closed.
